Week of Giving PROGRAMS AT the PUNXSUTAWNEY AREA historical & GENEALOGICAal SocIEty 7 p.m. March 16-20, 2020 Public Welcome No Admission Required Reschini Room, Lattimer House 400 West Mahoning St., Punxsutawney, PA Monday, March 16 Railroads (Sponsor: P&N Coal Company) Punxsutawney's link to progress during the 19th century was the railroad. This evening's presentation will look at the early railroads in the area and the competition to acquire a railroad in order to develop the coal resources. Presenter: Shirley Sharp Tuesday, March 17 History In Photography (Sponsor: Marion Center Bank) The Society has, as part of the photography collection, a large number of glass negatives which were donated to the Society by the heirs of Punxsutawney Photographer E.T. White. In this session participants learn what the Society is doing to identify and preserve these photographs. Presenters: Tom Curry and Deonne Weaver Wednesday, March 18 Eternal Baseball (Sponsor: Alex Park, Deeley Funeral Home) An original production by the Coal Memorial Committee highlights the impact of baseball on the Punxsutawney area as well as the contribution to the National Sport by Punxsutawney Players who made it to the Major Leagues. Presenters: Duane Miller, Tom Curry, Nancy Anthony, Scott North and Jeanne Curtis Thursday, March 19 Diaries From the Punxsutawney Area (Sponsors: Lundy & Lundy Law Firm and Jackie & Jeff Lundy) This session features three diaries from former residents of the Punxsutawney area: Abraham Rudolph from 1852 to 1870, and Viola Sweeney and Joseph Lymph who wrote their diaries in the 1890s when Punxsutawney was the hub of a rapidly growing industrial area. Their diaries reflect their day to day lives as well as the national and state influences on them. Presenters: Jeff Lundy, Gloria Kerr, and Jason Craft. Friday, March 20 Early Settlers from the Brandywine (Sponsor: Shields Insurance Agency) John North and John White came from the Brandywine to settle in Jefferson County. They had lived in Delaware and served in the Brandywine Rangers during the War of 1812. They were among the earliest settlers in the UTAWINEY JIVES Bridg le Co ity Folat Punxsutawney area.
